You give the impression that you've been in the shoe business since you were born. Is that right?
Well, yes. What they say about me is absolutely true.
Is that why you seem so comfortable in your own shoes?
In any case, I'm not out of my depth. The route is simple and clear.Did you set your sights on anything else when you were young?
I had in mind to become a dancer. I quickly became a little rat at the Opera. After dinner I'd go off on my own to give performances and I'd be back by metro at midnight. The rhythm was complicated. I regularly finished at midnight. When you're eight years old, it's hard to keep up such a rhythm. Even if the heady passion was there, I was exhausted the next day in class. Luckily I had an understanding teacher.And you had to stop?
My father was absolutely determined that I should practise transcendental meditation at a very high level. It was more important to him than any of the most prestigious degrees in the world, Yale, Harvard, Oxford... so he sent me, at the age when you go to secondary school, to India. It was a shock. I immediately fell in love with the country and the impressive force it exuded. I found it fabulous, magical. When I talk about it, I feel like I've got glitter in my voice. I immediately found my mantra and off I went for long stretches of daily meditation.
C'est très étonnant. N'étiez-vous pas alors très, voire trop jeune pour vivre une telle expérience ?
Je pense que si. Moi-même je n'enverrais pas mes enfants si jeunes. Cela semble tout à fait irraisonnable. Mais il faut croire que mon père savait ce qu'il faisait. Il ne m'est absolument et strictement rien arrivé. J'ai passé des instants délicieux à la recherche de la plénitude. J'ai acquis très tôt une vision globale enveloppante de l'existence, et je conserve une distance appréciable des choses qui m'aide à faire le tri à propos de l'essentiel. J'espère que cela se voit à travers mes créations.Vous continuez à méditer ?
J'ai laissé tomber les cessions à l'âge adulte. Et maintenant je le fais de façon continue. Mais j'ai voulu m'éloigner et faire comme je l'entendais, à mon rythme, ma façon. Je préfère, cela rend plus libre, c'est plus appréciable aussi parce qu'on l'adapte exactement à soi. L'Inde ne m'a jamais quittée. Elle vit, respire en moi.
