YEAR 2019 - YEAR OF THE GAL

It's been said before, it's been said everywhere, but we were the first to say it at the stroke of midnight on January 1st, 2019: this 2019 will be the year of the gals. We've been training for it for years, of course, but this is our year.

Here's a reminder of some of the milestones on the road to equality: in 1903, Marie Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. In 1944, we won the right to vote and stand for election. In 1965, we finally had the right to exercise a profession without our husband's authorization. In 1967, contraception was authorized...

I could go on like this ad vitam aeternam, for women's rights have enjoyed great success. Successes, and all the better for it, of course, but also frightening to consider, because it's based on the premise that we're not born equal. And what does the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen have to say about this? It says: Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. So, men everywhere, women nowhere. Did the guy who wrote this declaration run out of ink to include the word woman? Was he raised by an abusive mother? Cheated on by a woman he treated badly? Was he in such a hurry to go and play a game of bingo with his mates that he forgot about women in his statement? All the while knowing, worst of all, that this Declaration stems from the French Revolution, a feminine noun if ever there was one. Because that's what I'm getting at: the Revolution did take place, but not ours. Ours is happening, yes, but in small, symbolic steps, and this marathon revolution requires a lot of energy. Because sometimes, often, the ruling power, the dominant male, doesn't want to give up anything. Because if he were to share equally with us, he'd earn less, lose his balance and teeter on the brink of collapse. At least, that's the feeling that drives him to leave us in this position.

Today, in a so-called civilized country like France, in 2019 women continue to earn 24% less in wages than men. And what of domestic violence? 122 women killed, 62,000 women victims of rape (in 2015). Where are women in the public space? Their presence is growing, but remains marginal. And in literature? Cinema? How many Palme d'Or awards has a woman won? Just one. The Piano Lesson, 26 years ago. Are we really that much less worthy than men to have our prizes confiscated? Our word? Our time? Our sex? Our face? We all know the answer. So what's it going to take to reverse the trend and get what's rightfully ours? Do we get rid of all guys, send them to a planet with their Ricard, their video game console, their mother (oops), their soccer nights, their beer nights, their consoles, their "but I told you to do this, do that", their prohibitions, their fatherly advice? Could we castrate them and teleguide them as we please? We could also drug them, thus cutting short their aggressiveness and thirst for conquest, and get them into sewing, macramé or pottery. Or we could educate them properly, making them realize that equality means right now, and that we've already been patient enough to wait another second. We've got to demand, we've got to stand up on our own two feet, we've got to never give in, we've got to step up to the plate, we've got to get help if we need it, so that we can finally, definitively and permanently make our mark. Because, at the end of the day, we're not asking for anything exceptional, anything unbelievable, other than to have the same rights as men and to relegate Women's Day on March 8th to prehistory, where it belongs, at a time when there were neither men nor women on earth. So yes we need Girl Power, yes we need inclusive writing if need be, and a whole bunch of stuff that will make all the girls on earth feel strong, in their place, accepted, equal. So happy 2019, gals.
