Is May a good birth month ? It's my mother-in-law's month, so the question deserves to be asked. Even if we all know the razor-sharp sketches about mothers-in-law. To tell the truth, I started writing this newsletter yesterday with a theme in mind. Something strong that would have turned the internet upside down. But then, after resting my pen, I also diluted my memories with work and various other pursuits, such as watching the Prime Video remake of Roadhouse. A double heresy, you might say. On the one hand, you should never watch a remake, however bad it may be, and on top of that, you should never encourage home cinema. Because home cinema isn't cinema. It's called laziness.
And it's all done to give money to the tech giants, who, happy with their success, will continue to pump money into works without relief or panache. That's what's in store for us, the standardization of content between fights, wars, mushy romances and documentaries about serial killers. To this you may reply: "Ok, let's go to the cinema and discover Didier Bourdon's new comedy starring Christian Clavier". Well, I couldn't disagree with you more, because made-in-France films that recycle TV comedians or Chantal Ladesou.
There's something for everyone, that's true. But we mustn't let all these tastes be the norm, because we need diversity in creation, otherwise we'll all become a good audience for C8. So I saw Roadhouse and I failed in my duty as a dark room spectator and my duty as a cinephile. But I wanted to see muscle, sweat and beaches. I wanted to see Jake Gyllenhaal reprise the role of his illustrious predecessor, Patrick Swayze. What on earth possessed me to watch a remake of a namby-pamby ?
I still haven't found the answer, and neither has my psychoanalyst (I'll have to think about changing). The fact remains that I had a good time watching this film, perhaps even better than the original. And therein lies Doug Liman's brilliant idea in deciding to remake a rather bad film. He couldn't have done any worse. Therein lies the strength of this new iteration, which I wouldn't recommend watching. Instead, spend some time enjoying my beautiful shoes, concocted with passion and a sense of duty. On that note, I'm off to see the film again and prove Jeff Bezos right, in the hope that he'll later select me to go to Mars and leave the Macronie behind me.
